June 8 – Heather Walker & Collette Daghle-Berg: Search and Rescue Dogs (with demonstration) 1:00 pm at BASE
Colette Daigle-Berg retired from Yellowstone National Park in 2012 after a 33 year career as a park ranger. Interested in working dogs all her life, she started her first search dog in 1995. She has retired her third dog “Chapter” and will be getting a new puppy—an Australian Koolie—in mid-August. Colette is a member of Gallatin County Search and Rescue as well as Western Montana Search Dogs. Heather Walker has been part of the Big Sky community since 1994, moving here full time in 2012. As part of the Big Sky Fire Department, Ski Patrol, and Search and Rescue, she felt the addition of K9 search team would benefit the Big Sky SAR efforts. Heather trained “Storm” three years ago and they are members of Big Sky Search and Rescue, Search and Rescue Dogs of the US, and the Gallatin County SAR Dog Team. Collette and Heather will be giving a presentation on their favorite subject—search dogs. They will describe criteria for selecting a puppy for training, the different “disciplines” of search, as well as the techniques used to teach the dog discipline. They will also share some of their most interesting searches and finish with a short demonstration with their K9 partners, ___________________________________________________________________________
